The internet has revealed and proven conclusively that most people are completely unwilling and/or unable to form an opinion on their own on ANY given subject.
Instead, they somewhat randomly choose thought-leaders who's opinions they adopt, repeat and defend.
This alone is a sufficient explanation for why civilizations always fall in the end.
Even the best ideas lose against the worst ideas of the most popular people.
There is no free marketplace of ideas. There is a controlled marketplace of popularity.

Simple ideas with no second, third or higher order consequences are much easier understood.
Probably one of the main reasons, why those simple ideas/memes propagate easier and faster than more complex ideas/memes/concepts.
It even has some similarities to block propagation with regards to blocksize^^.
But maybe at some point somebody figures out a way to solve that puzzle/problem.
But it could be, that it is close to impossible to solve.
