Hardware wallets do not really support Bitcoin SV, and are often used in Bitcoin Cash mode. What if a firmware update for Bitcoin Cash mode changes something and the hardware wallet is no longer compatible with ElectrumSV? You have your seed words. -- rt12

But if you never update the firmware on the hardware wallet, it should always work with electrumSV after the genesis upgrade (provided there will be no more)? Is that correct?

Provided there will be no more what? -- rt12

upgrades to the BSV protocol

I should add, if you never upgrade the electrumSV past it's current version today as well. Then, under these conditions, you should be able to access your BSV with your firmware out of date hardware wallet?

If you are only running it in a virtual machine (VM) you guarantee to always be the same, and the VM on a computer that will guarantee to you to always let the hardware wallet interact with the VM the same. Then maybe, no guarantees. -- rt12

Paymail is not compatible with hardware wallets. Op return is not compatible with hardware wallets. They have no future the way they are. Better hardware wallets will arrive, move to those. -- rt12

seems like a lot of the supply could just get nuked

No, it does not seem like that at all. The hardware device requires you to write down your seed words. This is a fallback, and despite the limitations of seed words hardware wallets have same limits so they should work. -- rt12
