The carbon in CO2 is plant food.
Trees build their mass from carbon from the air.
What if there are less trees/plants but more CO2?
The more CO2 the better plants can grow. The fossil fuels we use is basically very old and compressed plant matter. So burning those allows the CO2 cycle to continue.
If not the Earth would find itself with increasingly fewer vegetation.
