Only the government has guns is a sure sign of centralizarion of power. Every tyrant from Hitler to Mao disarmed the people before killing millions.

Fact is, there are human predators. They have weapons. To take weapons from non-predartors is like cutting off the horns of goats because the wolves keep attacking the herd.

The only way to stop violence is force. Can you outsource force to someone else and hope they'll protect you? Sure. But then be consistent and throw away your fire extinguisher because the fire-fighting professionals will take care of it.

Complete pacifism, (as in "no self-defense") as RES mentions, is a possibility for those who have no family. It may be a very spiritual approach, but it is no good once someone is torturing your children and raping your wife. There's nothing spiritual about letting that happen...
