There is a great lesson to be learned from hitchhiking. Everyone has probably at some time see a hitchhiker get mad because you didn't pick him up. The attitude of such a person is essentially that of a communist: "Why don't you take me, I can see you got room!" Implying that you are somehow obligated to give him a free ride. Such a hitchhiker will get slower to his destination than someone who doesn't feel entitled to a seat in other people's car, and on top of that, he will be miserable, complaining and cursing. If you expect the world to accommodate you, you will start to hate the world. If you know that nobody owes you anything, you are grateful for any help you receive and don't have to get mad at those who don't do your will. Whenever I don't pick up a hitchhiker and then see him gesticulating in the back mirror, I know that was a good decision. I didn't need that person in my car and he desperately needed the lesson hitchhiking can give.
