Like children and nephews attacking each other for things that are contrary to their own beliefs.

I agree, it is sad. I will say from experience there are situations where, when patience and love underpin the situation, the relationship can self-heal. I had a nephew who was really upset with me about my views during covid and he's since come around and we are totally good now. It doesn't always happen that way I know.
