Good article. I think academia is also a major part of the problem. Everyone is trained to be a specialist in a narrow field and that means almost no one can see the big picture. A renaissance requires polymaths and generalists with multi disciplinary talent and vision. In addition, research is corrupted by corporate and government influence. Researchers are then forced to play the game to get funded. This leads to falsifying of results and also incompetent people rising to prominence.
