Gnosticism is very much on the upswing culturally, whether or not people are aware or call it by that name.

It has a lot to recommend and I value a lot about it, but there's an element of escapism from the physical that seems not courageous enough to me.

I blame/thank Jordan Peterson for that

Gnosticism is very puritanical and ephemeral - tailor-made as a foil to the Church of Woke Scientism.

I agree that it eschews the physical in a time when action is required, but it's hard not to feel a rising new spiritualism in the counterculture.

Interesting. He seems way more materialist than Gnostics. But his focus on the importance and truth in myths, and his exploration of Jung I can see definitely leading some people that way.

Theres a lot of 'ascension by fiat' goin on because of the trend but its a process. I say we tie it all together eventually.

Twetch ·

For sure. I love Gnostic focus on extended consciousness vs biological robots in meaningless universe, and belief in eternal consequences for thought/action. Dose of Gnosticism is really good for the age we're in. But lack of redemption for body is meh.

Twetch ·

lol. I love that phrase. What a great analogy.

Yeah, it's a great trend overall.

I’m one of those people.. I don’t think I’ll ever buy the Gnosticism but he’s nonetheless very entertaining to listen to. Maybe I want it to seep in on an unconscious level. I do believe people need to believe in something transcendent like people need...

We use to live near Sedona AZ which is the capital of the new age world lol everything is a crystal store. I like it and all but theyre acting like we live in a world of fairies... and only fairies. 🧚🏻‍♂️

...water and sunlight. It’s not something my logical mind wants to consider but maybe that isn’t so important. I’d rather entertain something like simulation theory before Gnosticism anyway.. seems more plausible IMO

Peterson recently had a convo on his podcast with Jonathan Pageau that is really interesting.

Pageau trying to reconcile for JP the mythical with the physical as told in orthodox christianity and the person of Jesus.

Regardless of belief, cool convo

Twetch ·

Well I'd argue Gnosticism basically is simulation theory, just with less modern computery language.

The Matrix is essentially a gnostic allegory.

"You see these lay lines? They produce vibrations for flourishing. I've had lots of time to study it because I'm unemployed."

Twetch ·

I’ll check it out. Saw clips from that episode but I’ll listen to the whole thing.. always a good time

Twetch ·

Indeed! In a sense, Gnosticism preserves Christianity in a way that the Romans never did - establishing the Demiurge makes Christ's emergence a clean break with Judaism.

And the "One True God" having no name is kinda Randian, which I vibe with.

Twetch ·

IIRC the Eastern Orthodox Church sort of preserved Sophia as a biblical character without actually introducing any of the Gnostic Gospels? Which is also rising in popularity in the West.

But you would probably know more than I would on that front.

Twetch ·

Yeah for sure. Focus on mysteries, could of unknowing, oral/mythical vs literal written word, etc. very much part of early church and still in orthodox (some extent catholic), and in an unfocused way pentecostal.

Nag Hammadi and Apocrypha both rising.

Twetch ·

*cloud of unknowing

JP: I think I’m wrong about my core tenants cuz I’m in debilitating pain 24/7
JP: it’s prob cuz you don’t go to church bro

Good one 😂
