Genuine question of my own: won't huge blocks disincentavize running full nodes? Won't verifying blocks become super expensive?

Correct. Only truly dedicated hobbyists and companies will run them.

That was always one of my biggest concerns about bitcoin from day 1. On the other hand, I always knew the decentralization that matters most would be the free market of many different cryptocoins to choose from.

I mean, not to be rude, but isn't it more realistic to say that the only financial incentive to run full nodes will be to launch a Sybil attack?

Twetch ·

That, and different coins can have different use cases and you can exchange between them so easily. You don't need one network for everything. BTC is fine as a secure digital gold. That trust in itself enables other use cases on other chains.

Indeed. In fact each chain can host on type of info and one currency used for that information, which is sorta how I thought things would play out back in 2010 before ethereum, when namecoin was the thing.

Still makes me sad how namecoin failed.

Twetch ·

absolutely will

Well, at least we can say that the BSV community makes it clear there are certain parties that must be trusted anyway. None of us really verify blocks for ourselves, we just use moneybutton anyway. But yeah, that old problem of incentivizing full nodes...

Twetch ·

Full nodes will be full businesses. Profit is incentive.

You keep making the mistake of thinking regular users need to run non mining nodes.

Twetch ·

Obviously not, since I choose not to. In fact, I realized very quickly nothing can ever be trustless, and I just like to know who it is I'm trusting. Nodes are the man in the middle between you and the blockchain. Just like to be aware that's a weak point.

Twetch ·

only valid reason to run a node would be to have privancy/anonymity when transacting behind TOR.

I guess some people value this above all else.
