The Garamantian Empire was an ancient civilization that existed in what is now modern-day Libya, particularly in the Sahara Desert region of Fezzan. The Garamantes were known as a Berber-speaking people who developed a relatively advanced society between around 500 BCE and 700 CE. They were known for constructing underground irrigation tunnels, known as foggaras, which allowed them to farm in the harsh desert environment. The Garamantian Empire also played a significant role in trans-Saharan trade networks, connecting the Mediterranean with sub-Saharan Africa.
