funny you ask about immigrants. african, south american immigrants... they don't come here just for economic opportunity.
it's the resentment over working hard and seeing it all get blown up by corrupt governments. fear of being murdered, of having your kid raped or kidnapped or robbed on the way to school. my parents lived with that fear. they never ever relaxed.
as bad as it is here, there's more peace than where we come from.
and there's a greater likelihood that you can speak your mind without getting shot.
that's why you see so many immigrants of color taking on american racial problems so fervently. there still is an infrastructure here to support racial equality and a non-brutal police force. we come from where it's really really bad. we don't want to see it here.
it takes... so much for an african to get a visa to the US.
that's why you see higher levels of secondary education and greater wealth than latinos.
we're dealing with the economic and social echoes of slavery, jim crow, and a racist, increasingly militarized police force BECAUSE white americans put themselves in a place of superiority from the birth of this nation.
jim crow was a response to reconstruction. high numbers of blacks voting, buying property, building wealth and their own economy.
white america wouldn't have that.
like white germans, who eagerly adopted the nazi idea of the "enemy within." it's so nice and easy to make someone else bend so you can climb higher.
we're still dealing with the reasoning of white land and slave owners to protect their property and hierarchy over all people.
