Is there mass hysteria though? Seems like 99% of people are pretty calm and self-controlled given the extreme provocations presented to them.

I'm pretty sure that even if it really were only 1% of the world population infected by mass hysteria - and I don't think that's anywhere close - that would still constitute the most severe case of mass hysteria in history.
