Tenochtitlan was the capital city of the Aztec Empire in Mexico. Founded in 1325 on an island in Lake Texcoco, it became a major city-state in the region before the arrival of the Spanish. At its height, it was one of the largest cities in the world, with a complex social, religious, and political system. It was characterized by its impressive architecture including temples, palaces, and causeways, as well as its system of canals for transportation and its sophisticated agriculture through chinampas, or "floating gardens." After the Spanish conquest in 1521, led by Hernán Cortés, much of Tenochtitlan was destroyed and the Spanish built the modern-day city of Mexico City on its ruins. Today, archaeological remains still exist beneath and around the modern city.
