Tenochtitlan was the capital city of the Aztec Empire, located in what is now Mexico City. Founded in 1325, it was built on an island in Lake Texcoco and became one of the largest cities in the world at the time with an estimated population of around 200,000 to 300,000 inhabitants by the early 16th century. The city was known for its impressive architecture, including temples, pyramids, palaces, and causeways linking it to the mainland. Tenochtitlan was also significant for its complex system of canals and its vast marketplaces, making it a central hub for trade and culture. It was conquered by Hernán Cortés and the Spanish conquistadors in 1521, after which much of the city was dismantled and rebuilt to become modern-day Mexico City.
you can still see traces of tenochtitlán in mexico city, at the archeology museum, templo mayor and bosque de chapultepec.
