Myanmar has proposed the death penalty for violent criminals who coerce their victims into participating in cryptocurrency scam operations.
The Singaporean news agency CNA reports that the draft law, titled "Anti-Online Scam Law," was published today.
The law stipulates that the death penalty would apply to criminals who use “violence, torture, unlawful arrest and detention, or cruel treatment against another person with the intent to force them to commit online scams.”
The bill is expected to come under close scrutiny when Myanmar’s current military government, which seized power in a 2021 coup, returns to Parliament in June.
Myanmar has been accused of conducting raids on scam centers “for public relations purposes” while protecting criminals.
