So far in my experience, bugs are the only bad part about the outdoors, and bug spray just sucks.

What are your best suggestions for dealing with bugs? (Hiking, camping, etc is the context.)

Light a fire, bring a friend who smokes cigars, ride a horse to swat them for you🤷‍♂️

Do garlic and onions actually work? I know they're potent smells, but I'm not sure why they would actually deter insects...

Twetch ·

Eat garlic and onions or use real deet.

Twetch ·

I agree. I also don’t use bug spay. Lose/lose.

Twetch ·

Another suggestion is to spray clothes with permethrin.

Twetch ·

Yes, seems like smokey fires may be the best approach, but that's not necessarily a solution at all times.

As for horses... They and I don't get along, at least so far in my experience lol

See, this is why I post things like this.

Y'all drop knowledge that's worth trying out, and you do it within minutes of me posting this.

eat lots of garlic and onion, dried citronella leaves in the pouches of your gear or fresh if you're stationary, long sleeves and a hat that covers your neck

They do work if you can stand the smells yourself. In fact you feed horses garlic to keep the flies off them.

Twetch ·

Stop taking showers and then the bugs won’t bother you as much because you’ll be preoccupied by your smell

Twetch ·

If you get bit, the best anti-itch is toothpaste. You always have it, it reduces the itch, and it draws out the histamine.

Twetch ·

lavender or peppermint essential oil, or just long sleeves

Twetch ·

They don’t like how I taste. 🤷‍♂️

Twetch ·

Ha, cute, Harry.

Twetch ·

Full body mosquito net?

Twetch ·

*returning to bump “ride a horse”*
they taste better than urban arson and come with a built-in flyswatter

Twetch ·

portable fan... when i was in AK the mosquitos and flies were nuts... deet didnt' even work... so we grabbed a nice size fan... problem solved.

If you'd quit being such a jerk the bugs would leave you alone.

There might be some saying about mesquitos biting people who say biting words?

(First troll twetch)

People also say the bus but the people who are sweet

Twetch ·

Many of these suggestions aren't very helpful for hiking/backpacking lol...

But I appreciate them nonetheless.

Maybe I'll find a way to incorporate some of the ideas.

A mix of dettol and baby oil works a treat

Vitamin B1, citronella essential oil too 👌
