This is a very false understanding of what actually happened. There was no political movement requesting self determination in those parts of the country. They were immediately invaded by Russian troops in 2014.

Imagine if Mexico invaded Texas and demanded that the latinos in Texas be given self-determination. You think the US government would give credence to that?
