My issue with DC is that, with the exception of Wonder Woman, everything since the Christopher Nolan Batman trilogy (well, since The Dark Night) has been needlessly and stupidly dark, and filled with over the top violence and destruction.

I'm ok with dark and grungy, but you have to earn it. They're not doing that with any of their films except for the aforementioned Wonder Woman.

You need a focus on character and story to earn the dark moments.

Setting battles at night is insufficient.

Said differently, you need Bruce Wayne to make Batman work. Batman alone doesn't have motivations or depth of character. It's just, as the Lego Movie would have you believe, "Darkness. No parents."

This is why The Dark Knight does so well (and whoops on the earlier typo.) It shows the struggles of Bruce Wayne to find balance with Batman, even putting Bruce as the hero who saves a man seeking to expose him as Batman.

His identity is front and center.
