I envision a future where WE control our data, and WE decide where/when we plug that into across the web. No more deleting accounts on sites only to have them secretly retain and sell our data. Come and go as you please at the cost of fractional pennies.

I remember when Diaspora* tried to do a distributed social network; I'm not sure if they are still up and running or not, looks like they might be. You controlled and hosted your own data.
