The elevator descends with unsettling smoothness, Squad Lea…
The elevator descends with unsettling smoothness, Squad Leader's weight shifting against your shoulder. Your nanobots cast a pale blue glow across the steel cage.
"This is wrong," Rogue's thoughts interweave with yours. "The security systems shouldn't be this... accommodating. Power readings suggest minimal but active systems."
Through the cage's bars, darkness swallows what little you can glimpse of each passing level. The air grows colder, stale with disuse, yet something about it triggers the edge of a memory you can't quite grasp.
The elevator doors part to reveal a T-junction, your nanobots' blue glow pushing back the absolute darkness. The pale light crawls across peeling walls and abandoned equipment, creating shifting shadows as you move.
"Three branching paths," Rogue analyzes. "I'm detecting different thermal patterns from each direction, but the readings are... inconsistent."
Your light catches a partially destroyed directory on the wall. Most text has been deliberately damaged, leaving only fragments: "Lab--" to the left, "--chives" straight ahead, and what might be "Cont--" to the right.
The Squad Leader's weight shifts uncomfortably. Behind you, the elevator hums quietly, its doors still invitingly open.
Which path do you take?
