The ego has two ways of dealing with its greatest problem, God:
1. Deny His existence
2. Imagining and claiming to be especially close to God, chosen, elected and therefore somehow above others (and the rules).
The former is common atheism.
The latter manifests for example in jihad (my evil is God's will) and the Inquisition, certain Christian sects that self-identify as the elect, and pretty much the entire New Age movement, which is just an "I am very special" cult.
