The ego is a very complicated thing, a shapeshifter, if you will.
Therefore it is very hard to grasp and can be in anything, including spirituality and religion, for lack of better words.
But generally, a good way to look at it is that the ego wants to be the arbiter of good and evil.
Or in religious terms: it wants to be God instead of serving God.
