I don't buy the "voting is giving consent" line.

"You're going to be beaten along with everyone else. You get to vote on whether it's with a switch or a belt."

"I'd rather it be the belt" =/= "I consent to being beaten"

With that said, voting is dumb.

Political power - that being the power to inflict one's will upon others - ought to be limited to self-defense and the reasonable defense of those unable (not merely unwilling,) to defend themselves.

But that is idealistic thinking, I know.

Personally I have never really understood the whole vote-boycott thing. For me it takes at most 5-10 minutes, and it helps prolong the road to socialist serfdom, even if just a little. It's not quite the same as consenting to the system.

Twetch ·

I see no reason *to* vote.

To be sufficiently informed to delay the road to serfdom, it takes far more than 5-10 minutes, and beyond that, that assumes that your vote actually sways the outcome, which is statistically less likely than winning the lottery.

It's kinda like, even when I visit cities I will likely never return to, I still cross the street to throw the trash in the trash bin. It might be convenient for me to simply throw it on the ground instead and not bother, but that's not a valid reason.

And about which party to chose, just pick the one that promises lower taxes before the one that promises higher taxes. Will they keep the promise, who knows? But if only people wanting bigger government vote, that's what's going to happen quick.

Twetch ·

Well if the Democrats get in you won't have to worry about democracy ever again.

But throwing out trash actually results in an improvement.

As for promises about taxes being your sole determinant for voting, that's a really oversimplified approach...

Twetch ·

You know I'm not going to watch that, right?

Twetch ·

Yeah, it's a simple heuristic. But anyway, I'm not nagging people to go vote, everyone may do as they want of course. It's just, I rather enjoy resisting big government (and hope others do the same), especially if it's little to none sacrifice to do so.

Twetch ·

Is it really resistance though?

Twetch ·

Well, I think so. It helps prolong some rather unpleasant things, giving people more time to plan with resources they still own.

Twetch ·

*prolong until they occur.

Twetch ·

That assumes your vote made any difference.

Have you worked through the statistical likelihood of that?

Twetch ·

We are back to loitering. You dumping your trash in nature or on the streets makes little to no difference - there will be tons there if you do or if you don't.

Twetch ·

No, we're not.

If you vote against the winning ticket, does the winning ticket change in any way?

If you vote for the winning ticket, does the winning ticket change in any way?

Vs: If you pick up a piece of trash, is the piece of trash still there?

Twetch ·

To say that the effect of picking up litter is small is true, but the effect of a vote that isn't on the margin is non-existent.
