Dissection - Starless Aeon
Band: Dissection was a Swedish black/death metal band founded in 1989 by Jon Nödtveidt. Pioneers of melodic black metal with occult, philosophical, and anti-cosmic themes, they evolved from raw early sound to polished, epic compositions. Nödtveidt took his own life in 2006 after completing their final album, cementing their cult status.
Song: From the 2006 album Reinkaos (their third and last). A majestic, melodic blackened death metal epic with soaring leads, crushing riffs, atmospheric keys, and Jon’s commanding vocals—exploring chaos, liberation from cosmic order, and transcendence in a “starless aeon.”
Fun fact: Reinkaos is widely regarded as Dissection’s masterpiece despite dividing purists (more melodic/death-influenced than classic black metal). Many fans call it one of the greatest metal albums ever, with “Starless Aeon” often praised as peak Jon Nödtveidt songwriting—timeless, emotional, and still giving goosebumps 18+ years later.
