Director of National Intelligence
• Avril Haines was sworn in as the Director of National Intelligence on January 21, 2021, making history as the first woman to hold this position and the seventh Senate-confirmed DNI in U.S. history.
• She has a strong background in national security, having served as Assistant to the President and Principal Deputy National Security Advisor from 2015 to 2017 during the Obama administration.
• Haines was the first woman to lead the National Security Council’s Deputies Committee and served as Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency from 2013 to 2015.
• With over two decades of experience, her career includes roles in government, academia, and the intelligence community, such as a research scholar at Columbia University and a senior fellow at Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.
• Before becoming DNI, Haines led the Transition’s National Security and Foreign Policy Team and was a member of the National Commission on Military, National, and Public Service.
• She earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of Chicago and a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center.
