The soul is about order. Body and mind are about control. Control allows them to combine their ideas of freedom: "do as thou wilt, but with impunity."

Body: "Do as thou wilt."
Mind: "Do what you can get away with."
Soul: "Do what you want, unless it violates other people's individual rights."

What was the soul before individual rights was an idea?

I don't think there's a "before". Always been like that, only the words differ: When the soul is in charge, individual rights are respected. When the soul is in a coma individual rights are violated. In absence of such concepts and terminology you'd just call it good and evil. Same thing.

That's one way to put it. Body and mind act in the realm of fear (survival). The soul acts in the realm of love.
