December 7, 2022 Moon eclipse of Mars

During opposition, the nearly full Moon will be incredibly close to Mars, making the event even more special. In fact, on the evening of December 7th (or early morning of December 8th, depending on your location), most of North America, Greenland, and northwest Europe will witness the Moon eclipse Mars — what astronomers call an occultation. Check the Calendar in Sky Guide for more specific information, including exactly when the occultation will begin for your location. Although lunar occultations occur several times a year for a given planet, years can pass between a location on Earth being able to witness the event. So, if you can see it, make the most of it! Who knows when the next will be visible?

I got up early several nights in a row because I could see without my telescope the moon and 5 planets lined up. This photo has them close enough to capture them in a line. They went all across the sky. Mercury and Venus on the left. Mars Jupiter and Saturn on the right.
