Data integrity and evidentiary commitments
Data does not need to be stored in full on-chain for the system to be useful. Hashes, signatures, structured commitments, and references can be placed into transactions so that external files, datasets, papers, logs, or experimental records can later be proven to have existed in a given form at a given point in the ordered ledger. For research, that has implications for reproducibility, auditability, provenance, and priority evidence.
