In the context of aviation, a jet is an aircraft propelled by jet engines. Jet aircraft typically fly much faster than propeller-driven aircraft and at higher altitudes – as high as 10,000 to 15,000 meters. This allows jet aircraft to travel faster because the higher altitude means less air resistance, or drag, on the aircraft. They have made long-distance travel much quicker and more practical than propeller-driven aircraft.
