The concept of enlightenment is much more problematic than it may seem.
For those who love Christian symbolism enlightenment is tightly connected to the dangers of the mental part of our inner animal/devil represented as lucifer, the light-bringer.
Satan is the material part of our ego, the body. The horns represent being ruled by our animal part. A human with horns is dominated by the inner beast.
Lucifer, on the other hand, is the light that shines into the satanic animal state of amoral survival. Which isn’t necessarily bad, it only represents a danger if it is the dominant force inside of us. Then, it self-identifies as enlightened, as more advanced, as special. All things the ego (inner animal) loves.
Ironically, the more in control the ego, the more we are convinced that we are enlightened. This becomes obvious onlu when enlightenment is identified as a concept concerning the mind (lucifer).
The soul needs no enlightenment, only the mind. The soul is beyond enlightenment.
It's humility recoils from ideas of enlightenment.
