Can someone help me by explaining what a derivation path is…

Imagine you are the gatekeeper to a huge river, off that river runs many streams that you are also the gatekeeper to. The main keys unlock the streams but without the keys to the main gate the streams are locked down. I don't actually know.🤷‍♂️

its in the word derivation... its to derive. So if I put in 5 words into an algorithm i can derive different outputs depending on the path or method of calculation... i think😶

Thx! It seems like maybe there isnt any answer that will satisfy a 5 year old because one needs to know more about wallets in general to fully appreciate this. But I get enough to understand where this comes from, used for and is somewhat “standardized”.

It not my situation. I just followed the happenings with Ali and moneybutton today and the part were MB said that he could access his money from another wallet if he knew the seed and the derivation path they use. Something with the wording got me thinking
