We're not. We're upgrading to unlimited sized blocks. This is just a temporary 2GB fix. We want to be able to support any companies ideas NOW. Companies like certainty, they like the idea of not worrying about growth being hindered due to external factors.
The demand was high for 2GB blocks. We will soon find out why.
Agree with all these comments. It's not really an "upgrade" just a gradual return to the original protocol. Fully restored to genesis in Feb 2020

I also see various reasons for >2GB blocks. In fact, it is very likely that bitcoin will also work as underlying protocol for million of websites/files in the future. Therefore, we definitely need larger blocks to handle this huge upcoming scaling process.
