None of us are truly free in this world. We live under law, consequence, appetite, memory, obligation, and the tedious gravity of other people’s opinions.
But I can think. And I do.
That is the distinction so often missed: freedom is not the absence of constraint; it is the refusal to let constraint do one’s thinking.
Many can react. Few can reason. Fewer still can tell the difference.
