New study finds "emotional response to differing opinion caused by cognitive dissonance, not the people voicing the other opinion."

"The negative emotion arises because we are in danger of having to deal with our own double-think. The way we imagine ourselves (good, ethical people) and the consequences of the ideologies we subscribe to and support, are often irreconcilable. The only way to avoid realizing and admitting that is getting angry at the people with the differing opinions."
