I see it as a way to discover content. I dont see it as an incentive to follow people.
Following people is an indirect consequence because I want to follow people with good content obviously.
If I follow someone then I can get notified of their content, and be the first to branch it, which rewards me
Better yet, somehow the one who branched the content such that follows result should be rewarded via a cut of the follow revenue.
Not sure how this could be implemented though...

Branching doesnt reward you directly. On the contrary you pay for it
If I see a good post it is worth paying to share because it will give value to my followers

It does so in more than one way. It encourages people to be curators, which is great. And it allows people to discover new good content without having to read the trash feed (Latest), which is even greater.
