Bees react immediately when the hive is threatened.
They all rally together against the intruder, attacking him until he can no longer move.
But sometimes they face a problem that strength alone canβt solve: the invaderβs body is too big to be removed from the hive.
If left indoors, it would begin to decompose and could endanger the entire colony.
To address this situation, bees use an extraordinary strategy. They cover the corpse layer by layer with propolis β a resinous substance collected from tree sap and enriched with enzymes produced by bees themselves. Propolis has powerful antibacterial, antifungal and preservative properties.
By sealing the body with this protective coating, bees insulate it, prevent the spread of odors and decomposition, and protect the beehive from possible diseases. It's one of the most amazing examples of hygiene in the insect world.
When bees can't remove a threat, they don't give up, they neutralize it and preserve the balance and order of the hive.
