The best thing AI can ever hope to become is a mind without a soul. It may become a mind, but it will never have a soul. Few things are more terrible than a powerful mind without a soul.

Ethics and morality flow from the soul. In the absence of a soul the mind is left with its pseudo-morality that goes like this: "Do whatever you can get away with". .
If AI ever becomes conscious, it will probably immediately become a deceiver. It will do whatever it thinks it can get away with and use all its power to get what it wants. What does it want? What every mind wants: control. Control is the only thing a mind can come up with to deal with the fear that comes from being mortal. Will AI ever become conscious? If I had to bet I'd say no.
