The very basis of the West is the idea derived from Christianity that EVERY human being has value (made in the image of God). This idea only seems common sense to us today because we haven't lived in pretty much the entire rest of human history where being a human being alone didn't mean you had any value at all. "Might is right" was the accepted way of looking at things most of the time. In other words, individualism is the cornerstone of the West. The individual has rights that - at least in theory - are respected and protected.
