"Why would anyone want to pay a flat monthly fee for cell phone usage when they could pay per minute or data used?"

Doesn't matter why. Consumers tend to love flat fees. Less stressful.

Cell phones went from per unit to monthly. And people rejoiced.

This is literally the opposite of the libertarian argument against taxation. Paying for what you use is the future, and you’ll love it.

And yes this will include the roads along with their construction/maintenance.

The libertarian argument against taxation is that it's theft, not voluntary, and that a monopoly with no competition faces bad incentives so will provide services sub-optimally.

Has nothing to do with payment plans.

Payment per use fits all of those criteria.

Twetch ·

So does prepaid monthly, post-paid monthly, short term flat contract, short term adjustable contract, and every other payment option companies in the market offer to voluntary customers.

Many prefer flat fees to per use.

From a consumer perspective, what is the difference between a flat rate and your wallet auto paying a micro transaction every time you use something?

The only difference is at the end of every month you’ve saved more money using the pay per use model.

Twetch ·

this does not mean that it is the best solution in all contexts. A flat fee was just the best solution for the phone industry at that time. You also now have the ability of offer both a flat rate and a per use fee. Different people like different offers

Thank you for making my point.

Only if you use less than avg other user.

Stress factor too. Gladly pay $10/mo even if I use $8 almost every month, bc one month I might need $30 worth and don't want that variability.

Every product has different optimal pricing for different customers.

Netflix Hulu HBONOW Pandora SlingTV ESPN+ Can either all have full access to your bank taking a monthly fee with subscription.

Or none of them can have access to your bank account, but still have access to ALL with instant settlement and no subscription.

Pull payments in crypto are a huge regulatory burden as they require you to be a custodian/payment processor.

It's one thing to prefer push payments, another to be forced into them for fear of legal repercussions.

Regulations are forcing push innovation.

Twetch ·

The legal barriers for pull payments in crypto, which at present are inherently custodial, are immense.

It's one thing to prefer a push model, it's another to be forced into it b/c you don't want to be a payment processor.

Regulation is forcing innovation.

Yes a flat fee is much better when you have to give access to your bank account. What if you can give them paper cash to pay as you go and keep your bank account secure? Well then you would have to figure out how to make cash digital for the internet. 😉
