maybe people can follow the stream, if they want to join they need a nod or a way to be accepted. I'm thinking of real world behaviour and how people join conversations. There's usually an acknowledgement of acceptance, a smile, "hi", a gesture or a way to be known as a part of the flow before stepping in.
