It had been a long time
since I could look
into your face, your eyes,
while mine hid
behind the opaque shelter of darkened glass.

I had the privilege of meeting
your gaze: luminous, serene,
a spark suspended
in the eternal abyss of a single instant.

I wanted to hold you,
but I couldn’t.
Not because I didn’t want to —
how deeply I longed for it! —
but because the moment vanished,
like a dream dissolved by dawn.

I was happy to see you,
happy that you didn’t turn away
from my hesitant gaze,
which tried to cling
to the spark of the impossible.

The silence between us trembled,
like a distant echo of what we were,
like an ethereal shadow
