I agree, that it is a pretty wild interpretation that you should never defend yourself.
My interpretation would be, that Jesus had only two cheeks.
The new testament came after the old testament, where disputes were handled by "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth".
So giving someone a second chance and not going completely nuts was probably kinda revolutionary.
But since Jesus only had two cheeks, he probably would have had some concerns when he got hit a second or a third time.
And he probably did not bent over two present his other two cheeks.
Since everybody can make a mistake once, we should think about giving second chances.

The analgoy reminds me of a concept out of Richard Dawkin's "The selfish Gene", where different algorithm compete against each other in a prisoners dilemma.
The best performing algorithm was a "forgiving tit for tat strategy".
Which means that the algorithm forgave one betrayal, but not a second one.

Depending on the situation in real life, I personally even give third chances.
