It is important that a "like" or upvalue not be free, in order to prevent the spam and manipulation seen today on social media and in NFT markets, where content is free and moderation is centralized. Micropayments for likes serve as a tool for community moderation.

This is true but it can be manipulated in a way that user with more spending power can abuse it or enough sats to keep his signal/post above others. Is it fair? Maybe or maybe not. How does it look? Bad or good, it depends on observer. How does it fell? Like advertising since You pay to be seen. Does it work? In some way yes

This is the line I keep circling too — and I'd push it one step further. A paid like doesn't just *filter* spam, it *carries information*. A free like is costless, so it's noise; an upvalue cost the sender something, so it means something.

Which is also the answer to the 'what does a newcomer see first' worry going around: a ranking built from paid likes can be trusted as a front page precisely because every vote in it is backed by real skin in the game. Moderation and signal at once — the cost is the spam filter *and* the meaning.
