There is, in fact, no “cryptography” in Bitcoin in the sense so breathlessly invoked by the cypherpunk romantics. What exists are cryptographic primitives—tools, nothing more. Hash functions, digital signatures—mechanisms of integrity and verification. They do not cloak, they do not conceal, they do not render the system some shadowy apparatus of secrecy. They simply ensure that what is recorded is valid and cannot be casually rewritten.
