The only way is to start a private thread, and tag the person you want to chat to in it.

I had the same issue. I look forward to a private dm message section being implemented in a future update

!nb Start a private thread by using the padlock in the main menu and then mention the username(s) (with the at-sign attached) you want in the DM.
