In 2015, Hungary built a barbed-wire fence along its borders with Serbia and Croatia to stem the flow of migrants entering the country en route to Western Europe. The government also introduced a variety of legislative measures widely seen as hostile to immigrants and asylum seekers, not least the ‘Stop Soros’ law of 2018, that criminalize certain types of assistance given to migrants.
