In 1958 Mao Zedong ordered all sparrows to be killed because they ate too much grain in an operation called the four pests campaign, this led to a famine that killed 15 - 55 million people. Sparrows are natural predators to many insects, including crop-damaging locusts. Locusts didn’t make Mao Zedong’s pest list since the sparrows consumed them along with the grain, controlling the insect population. Removing sparrows as the predator in their ecosystem led to a locust invasion of China's rice fields leading to the great Chinese famine that happened between 1959 - 1961.
