100 years from now, the people who misunderstand you will be dead.

The same will be true of your impact on society if you spend more time paying attention to the peanut gallery than on doing the work you're called to do.

what if your work is set in motion, is it cool to watch the peanut gallery while your impact does it's thing in the background?

If watching the peanut gallery is consistent with your preferences and priorities, why not?

This only applies to those who watch the peanut gallery and regret it because they never get around to creating what matters most to them.
