36 years ago, at the exact same time as the Brazil vs. Scotland match during the 1990 World Cup, a tragedy struck Iran. A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake hit Gilan Province, killing around 37,000 people. Between 50,000 and 60,000 were injured, and more than half a million lost their homes and became displaced. It was one of the saddest events in Iran’s modern history and one of the deadliest earthquakes of all time — occurring right in the middle of the World Cup.
Now, 36 years later, during the 2026 World Cup and on the very same day as the Brazil vs. Scotland match, another major earthquake has struck — this time in Venezuela, with a magnitude of 7.5. So far, more than 100 deaths and 21,000 missing people have been reported.
For years in Iran, people used to say that the World Cup had kept many awake that night, giving them the chance to escape and saving countless lives. We hope that this time too, the World Cup and people staying up to watch the matches will help save the lives of many others in this devastating Venezuela earthquake. Stay Strong Venezuela 🇻🇪❤️
