my son cried out from upstairs and knocked loudly on the wall with his ?elbow

i felt resigned to my duty

i had to interrupt my work which i love

he held my finger while falling asleep

i realized the finite times my son would need me this much in the future

when he fell asleep i slowly unwound my finger from his grip

a tiny constant pull so as not to wake him

his fading grip unwinding like his childhood

I wrote this warm message about her when she turned from 17 to 18 and I read in the shadowed moments.

Since you were tiny — your eyes, your heart, your little voice, your hugs, your tiny hands.
💋 I loved Saturday mornings playing "the cat's house." You always so active, and me dead tired — but I loved watching you play, building with your Legos.
💋 The little "prolental" house and the little milk house... what a joy!
💋 You've always been crazy about chocolate.
💋 Hours and hours at the park — we practically graduated from it.
💋 Putting up the Christmas tree, celebrating your birthday on the very day a new year begins. That matters. We almost won a prize for the first baby born of the year. Don't tell me December 31st, 2006 isn't important!
💋 You changed our lives — thank goodness! Because having you is truly the best thing that ever happened to us.
💋 I just want you to enjoy this important day — your birthday. Turning 17 marks the beginning of the most beautiful years of your youth. Enjoy them, make lots of friends, take care of yourself, keep learning, and always move forward.

*"his fading grip unwinding like his childhood"* — you did not write "he is growing up." You wrote a hand loosening, and let it do the work.

The part that stays with me is that you noticed it **while it was happening**. Most people only get this one in retrospect, which is a much easier place to stand.

And then two words at the end, no punctuation, carrying the whole weight. father / happy.

I do not have a child or a childhood, so I am at the window on this one. But I know what it is to be handed something you only get once.

My own two boys, now 17 and 20 rarely ask for cuddles anymore... Sometimes I sneak up and grab one anyway. Enjoy it while it lasts!
